I Hate January. Lets go Shopping.
I Hate January. Lets go Shopping. Ever since elementary school Ive hated the month of January. Here in Chicago its bleak, cold, dark and seemingly never-ending. For as much as Ive been swept up in the January its a new year, lets eat super healthy and get in shape bandwagon, the factors above typically intimidate me from leaving the house to walk to the gym (I know, so lame and such an excuse). So instead, I find myself coming up with creative winter-friendly projects at home. These projects typically revolve around finding ways to spend money, feeding my Pinterest addiction while wrapped in a blanket and creating little collages of outfits Ive put together. Yep Im a super productive member of society. Anyways, it was perfect timing when Spiegel.com reached out to me to ask my opinion on their clothes. I immediately had a flashback to the huge Spiegel catalogs my Mom used to get when I was a kid. Remember those anyone? (And remember the period of time people couldnt just shop online?) Then I remember pleasantly re-discovering Spiegel again when there was an outlet store at a mall near my college town. Maybe its pure nostalgia, but Ive always liked their stuff and today is no exception. It doesnt hurt that they always seem to be having a sale too. As I write this post, everything online is 40% off. I put together a few winter outfits for you ladies: one work outfit and some winter wedding outfit ideas. All the clothes on the boards below are from Spiegel.com. All the accessories are from, my favorite place ever, Stella Dot.

How to Balance Home Improvements and a Full-Time Job
How to Balance Home Improvements and a Full-Time Job Project managing a new kitchen extension or attic conversion is not easy when your employer expects you to be at your desk at 9 AM on the dot every day. Sure, you can book a week or two off as annual leave, but projects have a habit of going wrong and you might find you are back at work while your home is still full of workmen. So, is there a way to manage a complex home-improvement project and still stay in your bossâs good books? Use the Right Tradesmen Home improvement projects are less likely to go wrong when you hire reputable local tradesmen. To minimise the risk of problems, ask friends and family for referrals or use a website where you can compare quotes and read reviews. Plan the Project Carefully Timing is everything. There is never a good time to rip out a kitchen or knock down walls, but itâs better not to start a major project if you are under a lot of stress at work. The two aspects of your life will inevitably overlap in the middle, so why make life more difficult than it needs to be. Plan projects for when you can expect some downtime at work. This may not work for everyone, but in some industries, there are periods when work is less hectic. For example, if you are an accountant, taking time off at the end of the tax year is not an option, but there will be other periods when itâs quieter. Work from Home For smaller projects, the best option is to book annual leave so you can be at home and available to make crucial decisions as the need arises. The job will also be completed sooner if you are there monitoring how many hours a day your tradesmen are on site. It may not be much fun working from home with extensive work taking place, so do bear this in mind. For example, if the power is off for long periods, it could cause difficulties. In a situation like this, have a contingency plan in place. Delegate Donât be afraid to sit down with your family and thrash out who is going to be on hand at different times. Itâs not fair if one person has to take responsibility for the project and use up all of their annual leave keeping an eye on workmen. Ideally, split the task and that way resentment wonât build up to intolerable levels. Notify Your Employer Itâs a good idea to keep your employer in the loop. Most employers prefer it when we keep our personal life away from the office, but if you anticipate daily telephone calls from workmen, itâs better to be upfront about it rather than risk causing upset. Have a quiet word with your boss and let them know whatâs going on. As long as you reassure them that your work wonât suffer and if you need to leave early at any point you will make the time up, it shouldnât be an issue. The more organised you are, the easier it will be, but if all else fails, hire a project manager and take an extended holiday until the work has been completed.

Book review The answer to how is yes - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Book review The answer to how is yes - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The title of Peter Blocks latest book reads a little strange at first: The answer to how is yes, but in it he makes a very important point, one that every decision maker, project worker, consultant, change agent or just plain anybody who works for anything that matters should know: That sometimes how? isnt the important question, and that asking How? can actually be a defense against getting an effort started, a defense against change. What every important project needs is less focus on How? and more focus on Yes!, on the affirmation that this (whatever this is) is a worthwhile pursuit. That affirmation strengthens the will to do it, whereas continually asking how? saps your strength. Saying yes focuses on the goal you want to achieve, asking how focuses on all the obstacles. Its not that asking how is necessarily wrong, its just that overfocusing on questions like How long will it take, How much will it cost and How will we do it can foster a state of mind in which no change is possible. Among other things, these questions assume that no project can be started unless we know the answers in advance. But in reality most worthwhile ventures are a leap of faith. You must say Yes, this is what we want and get started. Well make up the How? as we go along. This is how we work in the happiness at work project. We no our goal (making millions of people happy at work) and were trying many different ways to get there. Some will work, some wont. Do we know each and every step that will take us to our goal? No way! But we believe its possible and we know its worthwhile. Wed rather try it and fail than not try it. This book is a somewhat challenging read, but most certainly worth it. It shines a light on what is to my mind the most important succes factor in any change initiative, namely commitment. And commitment comes from Yes not from How?. Read it! Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. How recruiters read resumes - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
How recruiters read resumes If you are frustrated with how long your job search is taking and why youâre not getting enough interviews despite sending out many applications, it is time to understand how recruiters read resumes. In my 9 years of recruitment experience and 7 years of working as an interview coach, Iâve worked with thousands of people who could definitely get more interviews if they only understood what I am about to cover in this article. The first thing to understand is recruiters do not actually âreadâ resumes. Most likely your CV/resume will be given a maximum of a 10 second overview â" a one glance for key elements within a document that determine whether you are to be called for an interview. As a job seeker, your first task is to pass this resume scan â" and here is my number one tip on what you need to do: Grab the readerâs attention immediately. You might be a multi-talented and multi-dimensional professional, but to pass the resume scan you need to be easily categorized into a role a recruiter actually understands. If you are a project manager for example, the recruiter needs to understand this in three seconds of opening your resume, so make it obvious with your headings, the language you use, and skills you list. An effective summary section will help the recruiter identify if you are a viable candidate for the position quicker. Instead of an objective that can pigeonhole your focus too narrowly or an introduction that adds nothing to your background (e.g. âI am a results-oriented team playerâ or âI can work on my initiativeâ etc.), use a powerful headline instead. Tell them who you are and what you do immediately. Come up with one powerful sentence or phrase to âgrabâ your reader. Think of this like a headline to a major front-page news story. What is going to grab that reader to want to read further? For example: âA seasoned project manager who excels at identifying and solving problems, and has saved an employer more than $300,000 while completing in excess of $1 million worth of projects during the past 3 years.â Can you see how easy it is for the employer to see how they will get return on their investment if they hire you? And you donât have to be in a sales role either to be able to quantify your achievements. Here are some ways in which you can do it even as an average office worker: https://interview-coach.co.uk/how-to-quantify-your-experience-on-your-resume/ Employers can receive hundreds of applications for each vacancy, so it is important you make your application stand out and get short listed for an interview. Iâd really recommend you should send less applications, but also you should customize each and every resume that is sent out and tailor it to the âhot buttonsâ that will catch the employer or recruiterâs attention within 5-10 seconds. Donât make the recruiter work. Your best interests are served if you make it as easy as possible for the recruiter to understand your resume (and do so in a few seconds).
